In chapter 10, I learned about the cause of the Civil War. In which slavery was the main cause of the war. The reason for this is because Northern States wanted to weaken Southern States by promising slaves their freedom if they aid in the fight against rebelling states. In the beginning salves were not meant to be a helping factor in the Union army, this was meant to be a white man's war to end the South's rebelling in creating an independent nation to promote slavery. I found this part of the passage the most interesting in chapter 10 because, the North had no intentions of freeing slaves until it gave them an opportunity to win the war.

In chapter 11, I learned about the of law more formally known as the black codes. These laws were meant to restrict African American newly acquired "freedom". The justification for the black codes is to keep the country a white man's country. This notion was so extreme that white Americans believed unequal law enforcement was necessary. This is the most interesting fact for me because, these laws were designed to keep black people in some form of pseudo-slavery.

In chapter 12, I learned about racial segregation prior to the 20th century. This process involves separating black and white people from each other. In America many places would have separate seating arrangements in theaters, concert halls, hotels, and restaurants. This felt the most interesting to me because, black people were willing to face separation instead of a completely excluded society.

In chapter 13, I learned about the significance of the Harlem Renaissance. Its significance is that it was a cultural center of black America. This time period in history celebrated musicians, singers, artists, and intellectuals. The Harlem Renaissance help changed the image that most people thought of black people. The reason I found this the most interesting is because, this era brought a rebirth for black Americans of having a new identity of panache and style.

In chapter 14, I learned about the Tuskegee Airmen. This was an all-black personnel squadron and created to invalidate the stereotype that black men are too incompetent to learn how to pilot an aircraft. These Airmen were impressive to the masses to the point that they are a staple in black history. I chose this part of the passage as the most interesting to me because, of how big of an impact the Tuskegee Airmen have in history, movies, and documentaries.

In chapter 15, I learned about the tragedy of the murder of Emmet Till. Emmet Till was accused of flirting with a white woman which broke one of the Jim Crow laws. As recompense two white men brutally murdered Emmet till and threw his corpse in the river. After this horrific event the mother of Emmet Till wanted an open casket funeral, so that the whole world can see what they have done to her son. This is the most interesting to me because, the death of Emmet Till was one of the causes for black people advocating for Civil Rights.

In chapter 16, I found the Carceral state the most interesting part of the passage. The reason being, even though judicial system advocates for "reverse discrimination" and "color blindness", it still shows a higher incarceration rate and a harsher sentence for black people than white people. This new system also affected black juveniles the most, especially with enforced drug possession laws. Even in modern day there are still attempts to discriminate against black people and bring them back into the shackles of slavery.
